UNDERSTANDING ROLLER BRAKE TESTING

WHAT IS A ROLLER BRAKE TEST (RBT)?

A roller brake test (RBT) is a traditional method of assessing a trailer's brake performance by testing each wheel station separately as it is driven over a set of rollers. This test measures the force applied to each wheel's brake to ensure they operate within the acceptable legal performance range.

HOW IT WORKS

  • Testing Setup: The trailer is presented onto the rollers, which then rotate the wheels at a controlled speed. Each axle and wheel station is tested separately as the system measures braking force.

  • Laden testing: Since 1 January 2023, the requirements now specify that, unless exempt (section 2.1), each trailer must be presented fully laden, carrying at least 65% of its maximum weight capacity.

  • Testing frequency: A minimum of four meaningful roller brake tests (RBTs) per year is required, including one during the annual MOT inspection. Vehicles can be presented for RBT up to 14 days before the safety inspection date.
