EBPMS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)

An Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring System (EBPMS) is a smart, data-driven brake monitoring system that continuously monitors and records your trailer’s braking performance whilst in operation. 

EBPMS makes use of live data from the trailer’s Electronic Braking System (EBS) and analyses deceleration rates using the BPW idem Telematics system.

By combining brake performance, speeds and distance, EBPMS provides ongoing brake performance monitoring. The data is then transmitted to the telematics system, which generates real-time data reports.

NOTE: The longer the system is in use, the more accurate the performance data becomes, improving fleet visibility and early detection of brake wear and imbalance.

EBPMS reports can be automatically generated in line with your fleet maintenance schedule, or at specific intervals:

• Daily

• Weekly

• Monthly

• Annually

• Or over a custom data range.

This flexibility makes it easy to integrate into your existing fleet telematics and compliance reporting workflows.

From April 2025, the DVSA required all fleets to include a brake performance assessment in every safety inspection. You can meet this requirement using one of the following:

Roller Brake Testing (RBT):

• Conduct a minimum of four meaningful roller brake tests (RBTs) per year, including the annual MOT.

• The trailer must be laden to at least 65% of the maximum weight (unless exempt).

Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring System (EBPMS):

• EBPMS can be programmed to automatically generate brake performance reports in line with a fleet’s maintenance schedule.

• It reduces the need for multiple laden roller brake tests (RBT) to just once a year during the annual MOT (depending on maintenance schedule).

No. While EBPMS can reduce the frequency of laden roller brake tests (RBTs), it cannot replace them entirely.

A roller brake test is still mandatory during the vehicle's annual MOT.

No. An Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring System (EBPMS) only monitors the service brake performance; currently, no system on the market measures parking brake performance.

Parking brakes must still be manually inspected during routine safety checks; acceptable methods include a visual check, drag test, or coupling test – Learn more (Section 5.4).

According to the DVSA’s Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness, the following procedure will be acceptable to assess the parking brake function when a trailer is fitted with an Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring System (EBPMS):

1. Confirm that the EBPMS system is working correctly, and that sufficient data is being captured to record the brake performance.

2. Check the EBPMS data to show the brakes are functioning within the system’s accepted limits (45% for the service brake).

3. During safety inspections, a competent person must assess all parking brake components to ensure they are functioning correctly.

4. Ensure drivers perform a tug test when coupling the trailer to the tractor unit. This not only checks the kingpin security but also confirms that the parking brake is functioning, which should be evidenced either during the safety inspection or within 14 days beforehand, with documented proof required.

5. Inspect the driver’s defect reports for any problems with the system’s operation.

An EBPMS report requires a minimum of 100 qualified braking events to calculate an accurate performance rating and to display an overall “PASS” or “LOW PERFORMANCE” result. 

If this hasn’t been met, the report will show as “NOT RATED.”

If your trailer already has a BPW idem Telematics Gateway control unit installed, no additional hardware is required.
