Self-steer

Semi-trailers have benefitted from the economic and technical advantages of the BPW self-steering axle for decades. Easier manoeuvring with the self-steering axle also makes operation more economical, reducing both tyre wear and fuel consumption. With an annual mileage of 100,000 kilometres, it is possible to save around 1,000 litres of diesel and four tyres – thanks to improved cornering performance.

Unique steering components enable automatic control and offer the trailer operator greater vehicle manoeuvrability both in and out of confined spaces. An instrumental feature is the self-locking facility when reversing. Unlike other systems, the steering mechanism is locked in the straight-ahead position as soon as the trailer begins to move backwards. The BPW self-steering axle is available for up to 27 degrees of the steer, ideal for LSTs (longer semi-trailers).

It has been shown that the life of a tyre on the front axle increases by up to 50%, while that of the rear axle can increase by as much as 70%.

Active Reverse Control:

BPW has developed an electro-hydraulic auxiliary system, Active Reverse Control, to provide improved steering capability, increasing the agility and manoeuvrability of the vehicle in reverse.
