Transport Engineer’s new Tech Talk feature in the January 2018 magazine focuses on 'Specifying Trailer Brakes' with expert advice from BPW’s Engineering Manager, Roger Thorpe.

Since trailers are predominately made to UK operators' specification for a given application, there are a wide range of factors to take into consideration. Designing a trailer is a very detailed process where choices include brake type, size of axle beam, suspension type, height and configuration and air bag size options. As part of this process, braking and stability calculations must be undertaken, as by law, all trailer designs must undergo type approval.

BPW axle and suspension systems include all BPW-made components which can be equipped with branded braking systems as required, made possible by suppliers’ reliance on common interfaces. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of the BPW product range and years of experience within the industry, Roger offers a guide to the challenges faced, the BPW solutions available to optimise performance and the support that we can offer to resolve issues by working in co-operation with the trailer manufacturer.
