BPW SHAPING THE FUTURE OF TEMPERATURE-CONTROLLED TRANSPORT

BPW is a globally recognised market leader in the commercial vehicle industry, and with over 125 years of braking experience has earned its reputation for producing high-quality, engineered trailer axles and suspension systems. Today, BPW continues to lead the way in temperature-controlled transport, driving technology, innovation and sustainability.

A PIONEERING PARTNERSHIP FOR A GREENER FUTURE: In response to the urgent challenges posed by climate change, BPW has joined forces with Thermo King to shape the future of sustainable, climate-neutral refrigerated transport. This partnership highlights BPW’s unwavering commitment to preserving the environment while supporting a cleaner future for the transport industry.

BPW EPOWER – THE ELECTRIC POWER AXLE: As global efforts to reduce carbon footprints intensify, BPW ePower, an energy recuperation axle designed for temperature-controlled vehicles, emerges as a vital solution for fleet operators. It not only helps minimise environmental impact but also maintains the highest standards of operational efficiency.

Unlike similar axles on the market, the ePower axle is equipped with dual generators, producing double the power compared to its industry counterparts. Traditional systems remain engaged throughout the whole journey, but ePower is smart and does not engage or carry current until the vehicle reaches 15 kmH.

Operating similarly to a bike dynamo, ePower efficiently converts wheel rotation into energy which is temporarily stored in a backup battery before being fed into the system when needed. This ensures that the cooling system always has access to sufficient battery reserves without unnecessary engagement, thereby minimising fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Depending on usage, ePower presents the opportunity to save up to 4,000 litres of fuel per trailer per year, and has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 10 tonnes per trailer per year.

THE FOUR-MODE ADVANTAGE: ePower is versatile and offers four generator modes to suit different driving conditions. Intelligent energy recuperation ensures electricity is steadily supplied when needed – even during longer journeys or in congested traffic conditions. The system also reduces resistance on the tractor unit and offers real-time battery charge status updates to both drivers and fleet managers. Settings can be easily adjusted via the BPW idem telematics Cargofleet portal, Thermo King’s TracKing web portal, and the TK Reefer app, ensuring seamless control and monitoring.

BPW ELECTRONIC BRAKE PERFORMANCE MONITORING SYSTEM (EBPMS): BPW idem telematics offers EBPMS, a system that monitors in-service braking performance and generates real-time reports. If sufficient data is available, the reports can be presented during safety inspections and used as an alternative to a roller brake test. Continuous brake monitoring allows fleet operators to identify potential braking issues well before scheduled maintenance intervals, preventing problems from escalating and causing inconvenient downtime.

Other advantages of continuous monitoring are:

  • Brake efficiency is calculated every time the brakes are applied, under varying loads.

  • Brake performance is assessed at normal highway speeds, not at slow speeds during a roller brake test (RBT).

  • The braking system is tested at its correct operating temperature.

  • Any faults affecting brake performance are identified before the next scheduled RBT.

BPW IDEM TELEMATICS – DIGITAL CONNECTIVITY: The BPW idem telematics system uses a customer portal called Cargofleet. Providing real-time performance reports, Cargofleet has more than simple track-and-trace features: it can provide comprehensive insights into the health and performance of a trailer, thereby enhancing trailer management.

Telematics is a ‘must-have’ for temperature-controlled vehicles. Seamlessly integrating with refrigerated units, the system can report on fridge temperatures, running hours, and fuel levels. Other features include: fridge fuel monitoring offering continuous tracking of fridge fuel levels, and door sensors for enhanced load security, enabling live updates on door activity and load status.

This level of connectivity ensures customers have access to reliable information, safeguarding the integrity of sensitive loads and ensuring greater control, security, and efficiency in every journey.
