MODULE 5 - BRAKE TECHNOLOGY 1

 

Designed as an introductory course in trailer brake technology. References are made to towing vehicles, but detailed systems for this type of vehicle are not included. References to ABS systems include operational modes, but not system fault finding. EBS is briefly touched on in this module.

Introduction to basic valve system functionality as used for ABS equipped vehicles.

  • How a relay valve works in the brake system
  • How a relay emergency velve works in the brake system and its position in the system
  • How a load sensing valve works in the brake system and its position in the system
  • How an adaptor valve works in the brake system, its position and why its used

Introduction of brake compatibility requirements

  • UK Construction and Use requlations
  • 71/320/EC & ECE Regulation 13 braking requirements
  • What the compatibility graphs show

Introduction into simple threshold testing methodology

  • Vehicles which can and can't be tested
  • The method
  • Examples and discussion of the results

Basic introduction of EBS

  • How it differs from ABS and what it replaces in the trailer system
  • How it is controlled by ABS and EBS equipped prime-movers

Understanding the VOSA brake test

  • The test procedures
  • Understanding the results
